  • Slavery already existed in Africa before Europeans arrived.
  • The Atlantic Slave trade started in the mid-15th century (1450)
  • The Muslim Ottoman Empire conquered the Byzantine Empire and sacked Constantinople in modern-day Turkey.
  • Wealthy merchants and traders benefited most from the slave trade.
  • In addition to working on sugar farms, enslaved Africans also worked in mines and on plantations.
  • Beginning in the 8th century, Arab Muslim traders and African Muslims exported more than 17 million Africans to India, the Middle East, and North Africa.
Take open note quiz, then work on map activity 45:  "Three Worlds Meet"

Description of battle narrative assignment (from pg. 133 of textbook):
Imagine that Mako is now an old man.  Write the story of Mako's battle with Tupa from Mako's point of view.  You might begin your story with a sentence like this:  "When I was just a boy, I fought the greatest battle of my life."  Include details that tell how Make felt and what he saw, heard, and did.  Try to create a sense of excitement in your story.

In order to prepare for this assignment, make the following notes: 
  1. Create a plot map
  2. Create a chart that includes details from the story and what Mako felt, saw, heard, and did
