- Slavery already existed in Africa before Europeans arrived.
- The Atlantic Slave trade started in the mid-15th century (1450)
- The Muslim Ottoman Empire conquered the Byzantine Empire and sacked Constantinople in modern-day Turkey.
- Wealthy merchants and traders benefited most from the slave trade.
- In addition to working on sugar farms, enslaved Africans also worked in mines and on plantations.
- Beginning in the 8th century, Arab Muslim traders and African Muslims exported more than 17 million Africans to India, the Middle East, and North Africa.
